Take the train to your trail!

After years of tearing around the West in a car to reach spectacular backcountry trails, it dawned on me that driving contradicts the experience I sought from hiking. We hike to connect with nature, right? Not only does driving a car to the trailhead slowly destroy the elements of nature we cherish (air, water, trees, wildlife, quiet), but the traffic we endure is stressful and dehumanizing.

So I began to identify hikes accessible by train, starting with the passenger train route in my own backyard, Amtrak's Capitol Corridor in California. Then I wrote some simple guides to these hikes that are now available here -- for free.

To get started, click on "The Map" link above for a Google map of the available guides. Seven are available now. I hope to offer more in the future, and who knows, maybe package them as a book one day.
